3 Important Oral Health Warning Signs

Dealing with an unexpected emergency is no fun, especially if it involves a costly repair or it disrupts your plans. Thankfully, many of the things we use on a daily basis, our cars for example, often give us warnings or have indicator lights to notify us of a pending problem we should have checked out before it becomes a significant and expensive issue. Our mouths work in much the same way. We often have patients who are surprised when they experience a dental emergency, but then realize their mouth has been giving them warning signs for quite some time. Warning Signs in Your Mouth

Dealing with a dental emergency or problem in your mouth is not something any of us looks forward to; however, there are warning signs in your mouth that can be alerting you to a potential problem. These signs include:

Tooth Sensitivity
If you notice you are experiencing sensitivity to extreme temperatures while eating and drinking, it can be a sign that there is a problem with your teeth. Tooth sensitivity can be related to weakened or damaged tooth enamel, which is the outer covering of the tooth. There is also a concern if you are experiencing sensitivity in an area where you have had dental work, such as a filling or dental crown.

Tooth Discomfort
Whenever you experience discomfort or pain in your mouth, it can be concerning. Before contacting the office, we recommend brushing and flossing thoroughly to ensure there is not trapped food causing an issue. If the discomfort persists, contact us as soon as possible before you are in significant pain.

Changes to Your Gums
While inspecting your gums, if you notice they appear red or swollen, it can be an indication you are experiencing the effects of gum disease. We would also recommend a visit if you notice your gums frequently bleed.

If you notice any of the warning signs mentioned above or it has been some time since your last hygiene examination and cleaning, we recommend calling our office located in Fort Lee, NJ to schedule an appointment. We want to help prevent any issues from developing into a severe problem.
