Dental X-rays have been around since the early 20th century and are a key part of dentistry, as they help us examine your teeth and diagnose dental problems by showing us what we cannot see with the naked eye. Today’s digital X-ray technology, however, is a far cry from the traditional X-ray process you might have grown up with.
Digital X-ray technology uses an electronic sensor to capture images of your teeth. The technology uses a digital-detector system that converts the X-ray signals into an image on a computer screen, significantly reducing the amount of radiation used and, therefore, much safer for patients.
Benefits of Digital X-Rays
- Clear images: Digital X-rays can be easily resized and enlarged without distorting the quality of the image. Traditional X-rays lose their image quality over time and require new X-rays to be taken more often.
- Less material and waste: Materials like film and chemicals used in traditional X-rays are costly and harmful and require careful disposal.
- Low radiation risk: 80% less radiation is used with a digital X-ray than with traditional dental X-rays. This greatly lowers health risks to patients.
- Speed: Digital X-rays images can be viewed on a computer screen in a matter of seconds after they are taken. We can easily show patients the images while they are sitting in the dental chair, allowing us to better inform them about their dental conditions.
If you have any questions about the equipment or technology we use in our Fort Lee office, we will be happy to answer them at your next visit. Until we see you again, have a great day.
