Are Your Lifestyle Choices Affecting Your Oral Health

At Infinity Dental Wellness, we are passionate about our patients’ optimal health and living their best, healthy lives. One of the best ways to do this is to make wise choices in your everyday life that do not negatively affect your oral health. Unfortunately, some patients do not always make the best choices when it comes to their oral health. Here are some ways your lifestyle may be negatively affecting your oral health:

Drink Choices Other Than Water
We know that many of our patients love to drink coffee and soda throughout the day. These drinks, especially coffee concoctions from your favorite coffee shop, can be full of sugar. Drinking these types of drinks throughout the day, with a sip here and there, can be problematic for your oral health. Every time you take a sip of your drink, you are introducing sugar and harmful bacteria into your mouth. When this happens repeatedly, day after day, you are headed down a road to tooth decay. If you choose to have a drink with sugar, we recommend drinking it in one sitting instead of sipping throughout the day. The ideal choice would be to switch to water. Water not only hydrates the body, but it can also help rid the mouth of bacteria.

Smoking and Alcohol Consumption
For years, you have learned about the dangers of smoking, not only for your overall health but also for your oral health. Chewing tobacco can also cause oral cancer in patients of any age. Even young adults can be diagnosed with oral cancer due to tobacco products. Overindulging in alcohol can also lead to serious issues. Problems can arise, such as gum disease and decay.

Snacking
Along with drinking throughout the day, snacking around the clock can also cause severe problems with both tooth decay and gum disease. Each time you eat, harmful bacteria remain on and between the teeth and along the gumline. If you do not brush each time you eat, this added bacteria can develop into decay. This is one of the reasons that we recommend eating during mealtime.
