What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses a sedative medication to help you feel more relaxed during treatment. It is a fantastic way to be sure that you get the dental care you need, even if you are nervous, scared, or fearful. Dr. Odinsky has received advanced training on using sedation dentistry and can help guide you on which option may be best for you. We offer three forms of sedation:
- Nitrous Oxide – Also known as laughing gas, this option is the least invasive and is administered through a mask in the office. There is no lasting effect, so patients can drive themselves to and from their appointment
- Oral Sedation – This method requires patients to take a pill approximately an hour prior to their appointment. They will remain in a relaxed state before, during and after the treatment. We require patients to be driven to and from their appointment.
- IV Sedation – This sedative is administered directly through your vein into your bloodstream and works quickly. The levels can be adjusted in the office and it is typically recommended for patients who have extreme anxiety.
Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?
There are a number of reasons that sedation dentistry may be recommended to you. Aside from patients who are extremely nervous or fearful of the dentist, sedation dentistry can also help patients who:
- Cannot sit still for long periods of time
- Have a heightened gag reflex
- Had a prior negative experience in a dental office
- Cannot tolerate the sights, smells, and sounds of a dentist office
