Helping Your Teen Manage Their Dental Health
At Infinity Dental Wellness, we provide dental care with a focus on well-being. Since we see our patients so infrequently during the year, the bulk of our patients’ oral care falls on their shoulders. This is one of the reasons we stress the importance of properly caring for your oral health between visits. We know that many of our adult patients have children or young loved ones in their lives. Children have the benefit of still having an adult help them properly care for their teeth.
Oftentimes problems begin to arise when children move into the teen years. Teenagers are known for testing boundaries as they navigate their way to adulthood. Whether you have a teenager in your home or not, you most likely remember your teenage years and the feeling of longing for independence. At times, this independence may come out in the form of not properly caring for their teeth.
Help Create Good Habits
One of the best things you can do for your teenager is to create an oral hygiene routine at a young age. When teenagers know how to properly care for their teeth, they have achieved half the battle. Be sure they understand the importance of cleaning your teeth properly. We also recommend that your teen maintain their routine oral hygiene examination and cleaning every six months. Here are some helpful tips that not only apply to your teen, but to anyone in your household:
- Limit soft drinks and sports drinks and encourage drinking water instead
- Provide healthy snack options and discourage fast food and junk food options
- Encourage brushing and flossing after meals, especially when wearing braces
- Discuss the dangers of sharing toothbrushes
- Remind anyone who plays sports to wear a mouthguard
