Importance Of Following Before And After Treatment Directions
Our goal is for our patients to have excellent oral health at all times. While this is ideal, we know it is not reality. Thankfully, we have the treatment know-how and technology to fix any oral health problem you may be experiencing. If we recommend a specific dental treatment, it is extremely important to schedule and receive that treatment in a timely fashion. Failure to do so can lead to serious complications with your oral health and may cause you to need additional or more extensive treatments. While it is critical to schedule your treatment appointments on time, it is also critical to follow any before- and after-care instructions for your treatment and recovery. Failure to do so can negatively impact the results of the treatment.
We have been following directions our entire lives, so it should not come as a surprise that there may be directions you need to follow before and after receiving dental treatment. Some patients may need to stop certain medications for a period of time before treatment to help prevent an infection or bleeding complications. Failure to follow our before-treatment directions may cause us to postpone the appointment.
Whether you are having a common treatment, such as a filling, or a more involved treatment, like a dental implant, there are instructions that we will provide following treatment to ensure you remain comfortable and the treatment is successful. While it is important to listen to your body, doing certain things before we recommend them can cause the treatment to fail and need to be repeated. This will not only lead to additional expenses but can be uncomfortable as well.
Don’t Eat While Numb
We need to use a numbing agent with many of the treatments we provide to patients. No matter the treatment, it is always recommended not to eat while you are still numb. It is not difficult to bite your tongue, cheek, or lip and cause serious damage. Once you are able to eat again, we recommend eating on the opposite side of your treatment to be sure the area is fully healed.
