Make Your Gum Health A Priority

At Infinity Dental Wellness, we make both our patients oral and overall health a top priority. We stress to our patients the importance of maintaining routine hygiene examinations as well as continuing with a thorough oral hygiene routine at home. During routine exams in our office, we do much more than inspect for decay and clean and shine your teeth. We also check for other conditions and diseases that can negatively impact the health of your teeth and mouth, as well as lead to severe health complications with your overall health. One disease that can greatly impact your mouth and body is gum disease.

What is Gum Disease?

At any given moment, your mouth is full of bacteria, beneficial and harmful. The ideal situation for optimal oral health is for the beneficial bacteria to overpower the harmful bacteria. When harmful bacteria in your mouth increase, it can lead to oral health issues such as gum disease. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is detected when harmful bacteria infect and inflame the gum tissue. When left untreated, it can lead to serious complications such as gum recession, tooth loss, and jawbone deterioration. It can also lead to systemic conditions such as heart disease, pregnancy complications, stroke, respiratory disease and diabetes.

Ways to Prevent Gum Disease

The best way to prevent gum disease is to maintain an oral hygiene routine. This includes flossing once per day and brushing teeth thoroughly a minimum of twice per day. We also recommend visiting our office for routine hygiene examinations. Most patients are advised to visit every six months; however, if you have previously been diagnosed with gum disease, we may have recommended a shorter duration between visits to receive soft tissue treatments or other recommended treatments.

If you are located in the Fort Lee, NJ area and have any questions about gum disease or a recommended treatment plan, be sure to contact our office to schedule an appointment. We are here to help get your oral health back on track.
