Sedation Dentistry

Do you dread going to the dentist and wish it was as relaxing as a walk in the park? You’re not alone. Many patients have dental phobia, or a fear of the dentist. Some people feel so much anxiety that they avoid going to the dentist altogether and put their dental health at risk. We want you to feel as comfortable as possible when you visit our office and have a few solutions to help you overcome your anxiety and fear.

Sedation dentistry, which uses medication to help a patient relax during dental procedures, is a wonderful option for patients who feel extreme anxiety about the dentist.

The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

There are several reasons patients opt for sedation dentistry:

  • The patient can let go of fear and anxiety while maintaining the ability to communicate with the dentist during treatment
  • It helps the patient sit for a lengthy appointment
  • It’s a great option for patients who have heightened gag reflexes
  • Patients with anxiety because of a prior negative experience feel relaxed
  • It’s perfect for patients who cannot tolerate the sights, sounds, and smells of a dentist office

Sedation Dentistry Options

Our office offers three options for sedation dentistry based on your need:

  1. Oral Sedation – is a pill that is taken approximately an hour before the appointment and a great option for patients who feel extreme anxiety prior to their appointment. It helps create a sense of peace and calm before the patient arrives. It is also a great option for patients who have a longer procedure scheduled.
  2. Nitrous Oxide – commonly known as “laughing gas”, is a gaseous sedative that creates a calming effect to help patients feel at ease and relaxed during dental procedures. It is administered to you in our office during your procedure ,it works immediately, and, once the gas is stopped, you return to a normal sense of awareness immediately.
  3. IV Sedation – the sedative is administered through a vein, so it goes to work quickly. This method of sedation allows the dentist to continually adjust the level of sedation needed. With IV sedation, you will remain in a semi-awake state and will most likely have little to no memory of the treatment.

These forms of sedation dentistry are safe and effective and will help put you at ease during your visit. There’s no need to avoid important treatments anymore. If you would like to learn more about sedation dentistry, please contact our location in Fort Lee, NJ today.
